What is Copilot in SharePoint?
Copilot in SharePoint (formerly AI in SharePoint) is Microsoft’s embedded AI layer that turns your SharePoint environment into an intelligent, searchable knowledge base. Instead of digging through folders and sites, employees simply ask and get answers drawn directly from your organization’s own content.
It’s currently in public preview, which means now is the ideal time to get ahead of the curve. Organizations that set up and configure it properly today will be best positioned when general availability arrives.

Describe what you need in plain English and Copilot proposes a full site structure — pages, libraries, lists, and navigation — before building anything. You review and approve the plan, then your site is provisioned in minutes, complete with sample data. No SharePoint expertise required.
Create document libraries with AI
Describe the library’s purpose and optionally upload a sample file. Copilot generates the library name, description, and a complete metadata schema with AI-powered columns that automatically tag documents as they’re added — turning a manual setup task into a 60-second job.
Create autofill columns
Copilot analyzes up to 20 existing files in a library and suggests metadata columns with extraction prompts that automatically populate values when new files are added. No more manual tagging — metadata flows from document content, improving findability and enabling downstream automation.
Automate workflows in a library
Set up library automation rules using plain language — no Power Automate experience needed. Describe what should happen (send a notification, move a file, copy to another folder, update a value) and Copilot configures the rule. Perfect for routing contracts, escalating approvals, or organizing incoming files.
Create views in a library
Describe how you want to see your library content and Copilot creates a custom view — showing and hiding columns, sorting, filtering, and grouping based on your request. Surface what’s most important to you or your team without touching SharePoint settings manually.
Monitor file processing status
Track real-time progress of AI operations on your files. See whether autofill, tagging, or document processing is in progress, completed, or failed — with an activity panel showing file names, summaries of what was done, timestamps, and error details.
Structured document generation
Turn Word templates into intelligent AI-powered forms. Content managers define the template and fields; content consumers fill out a form and a compliant document is automatically generated — preserving approved layout and language while merging submitted values. Ideal for contracts, offer letters, purchase orders, and compliance documents.

Created in plain language via chat and stored as Markdown files in the Agent Assets library, skills encode your organization’s specific rules — document standards, review checklists, naming conventions — so Copilot follows the same playbook every time, automatically.
